Final Destination: Bloodlines - Review

Another legacy sequel,

These films have had such a resurgence in the market as of late, with seemingly every franchise trying to get into the pot on making some more money of a pre-existing property, and to bring some cast back and establish some cultural recognition once more. While I'm all fine for some remakes and redos, some of them just stand out from the rest and I can't believe I'm saying this but I genuinely believe but Final Destinations: Bloodlines is one of those.

From the moment I sat down in the cinema to watch this movie, I knew what I was getting into. After all, Final Destination's legacy is that of plane engines, trains, and writers that I would love to sit through a therapy session with. I knew that this movie wasn't going to reinvent the wheel and set a new precedent for the genre. You may be wondering why I went if I knew what to expect. Why spend my hard-earned pennies to watch this movie if I could tell you beat by beat what would happen?

The fast answer to that question is that my girlfriend wanted to go watch it, the second being that sometimes we just need some blind enjoyment of clever writing, insane set pieces and finding out new ways to be terrified of the world around us (looking at you logs and metal poles on back of trucks)

Final destination bloodline hits all those notes to me, the first section of the movie gave me all I needed to know that this was going to be a fun time. The setting, the set ups and finally the execution had me verbally reacting to the insanity on the screen. While its first set piece was clearly where they spent a good amount of time the rest of the movie attempts to really push that gas pedal more and more unfortunately it didn't hit as hard as the 1st 20 minutes of the movie, they were still fun times to be had watching these poor souls try and escape from death itself. I had myself thinking what it would be like to be in the writers room when they were coming up with these ideas. it seemed like a tone of fun.

Character wise and acting wise, there isn't really anything to write home about but you normally don't go to a final destination movie expecting Oscar worthy performances. They’re fun, and each character serves their purpose well even if some of them truly are just cannon fodder.

Overall if you are a fan of this genre and this franchise then 100% go out and see this movie, you'll enjoy yourself. You might get some few squirms and at the end of the day that is 100% what Final Destination: Bloodlines is aiming for. However, from a personal perspective I would love to a little bit more evolution in the stories beats and characters to really set it aside from the other films that came before. Otherwise it's going to just be known as the legacy sequel to make that quick buck. I'm giving Bloodlines a 7/10 as I was thoroughly enjoyed watching, will it be worth a re-watch ? Probably not, however once again I applaud the writers for doing some truly crazy stuff. Rest in peace Tony Todd, you were one of the greats for horror films.

Let me know what you thought of the movie, and please leave a suggestion if I should go back to any particular Final Destination film. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
